Mayor Bradley Stephens
State of the Village Address
Rosemont Chamber of Commerce
September 11, 2019
Good afternoon and thank you once again for inviting me to address the Rosemont Chamber of Commerce on all things Rosemont. We have enjoyed another great year and are looking forward to some exciting things in 2020. The economy in Rosemont continues to be strong as a result of Village revenue continuing to outpace last year. Hopefully, this means that business is good for you, too.
In the past year, we opened the new Rose Hotel as well as Carmine’s, Truluck’s and Dave & Busters in the Pearl District. Tomorrow, we will cut the ribbon on the DHL Innovation Center which will bring thousands of people to Rosemont annually from all over the world to showcase the innovative ways to manage logistics. I can’t be happier with the way the building turned out and am excited to add DHL to the list of corporate tenants in the village.
As far as our Village enterprises, they continue to prosper, also. The Allstate Arena was once again named one of the top venues in the industry while hosting several top acts, including our hometown team, the Chicago Wolves, who celebrated 25 years of play at the Calder Cup finals. This month begins an exciting line-up, featuring Columbian entertainer J Blavin, Mexican singer-songwriters Gloria Trevi and Pepe Aguilar followed by five Monster Jam shows. The Wolves begin their quest for the cup on October 5th. Feld Entertainment brings their new Jurassic Park Dinosaur show, November 1st, 2nd and 3rd and wrestling fans won’t be denied an opportunity to be entertained with consecutive nights of high impact action on November 22nd – 25th. This is the only time anyone can recall (WWE producing) four live events, held on consecutive days in the same venue.
Other acts through the fall/winter schedule include Bon Iver, Mana, Marc Anthony and the Lumineers.
At the Theatre, this fall/winter schedule includes Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Deep Purple and Alessia Cara, as well as a great line-up of family and holiday shows including Sesame Street Live, Baby Shark and Disney Junior’s Holiday Party.
If you can’t find something happening in those two venues that piques your interest, you’re not trying! The Convention Center continues to host several events that bring thousands of folks to Rosemont. This past summer, Rosemont played host to the very successful Bears Convention celebrating their 100th anniversary, while other public shows held at the center continue to attract record attendance numbers for those groups. In October, we will be hosting a new pop culture event, “Ace Comic Con” Midwest featuring Marvel characters Brie Larsen (Captain Marvel). Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Holland (Spiderman) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Mysterio), will all be on hand, as well as several others, for the event held October 11th to the 13th. We are having groups that have held shows here in the past taking another look at the facility due to the new developments around the center or the upgrades that we have made to the building. Additionally, we will be renovating the South Ballroom over the next several months.
Our other entertainment venues continue to attract crowds to Rosemont as well as Parkway Bank Park, which is “the place” to go for summertime fun with our Thursday night concerts. Plus, we have added some Friday night events that have been successful. Also on tap have been family friendly weekend events that satisfy the little ones.
We recently welcomed Chicago Harley Davidson to the development and will soon be adding Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar. Harley hosted a grand opening event on September 17th from
6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Pete’s is scheduled to open mid-October. Both venues will be great additions to Parkway Bank Park. Additionally, AMC is undergoing a complete renovation and Fogo de Chao is converting their space, adding another 80 seats in their main dining room.
Both our Chicago Bandits and Chicago Dogs had successful seasons. Our women’s professional fastpitch softball team was the regular season champion advancing to their second consecutive Cowles Cup series. The Chicago Dogs saw their attendance grow to more than 3,600 fans per game, placing them third in average attendance for the American Association. They hung on until the final weeks of the season, when they fell only slightly short of making the play-offs.
Both the Bandits and the Dogs provide a great opportunity for fun at affordable prices; so if you haven’t been out to see them yet, make sure you set some time aside to do so.
On the municipal services side, we are in the design stages of building a new Public Safety facility to be located where the one-story industrial buildings near the arena stand today. We have acquired most of the property in that area which is scheduled for demolition in the first week of October that will clear the way for state-of-the-art technology for Rosemont’s Public Safety Department. Our hope is to begin construction once the weather breaks after the first of the year, and will be completed and fully operational no later than the 1st quarter of 2021. The new facility will be comprised of better training facilities for our officers, as well as a potential home of the consolidated dispatch center that the Village is in the process of joining, as well as the new jail facilities and other items that have become a necessary part of law enforcement and fire suppression work in the crazy world we live in today. I am extremely proud of our (Public Safety Department) and the work they do. This is money well-spent.
I have just a few transportation items I would like to mention. Starting September 24th the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority will be doing some work on the wearing surface on the Balmoral Avenue Bridge. That work is estimated to take two to three weeks. The River Road resurfacing from Bryn Mawr Avenue north to Devon Avenue is currently underway and is expected to be completed this construction season. We will do our best to keep you informed on any lane closures, etc., as this work is completed.
As always, you can keep up to date by going to www.rosemont.com. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, give us a call and our staff will assist you in finding the information you seek. Once again, thank you for your commitment to this wonderful community. We are all partners here in our quest to keep Rosemont at the head of the pack, and remain the very unique community we are.
Have a great day!
